Five hundred dollars is the budget where prop firm shopping stops being about the cheapest ticket and starts being about the best firm. Under $200 you are mostly choosing between small accounts; under $500 you can buy a $100k futures evaluation, a $50k FTMO challenge, or three attempts at a mid-tier account. This guide ranks what that budget buys in 2026 by the firm's payout record, not by sticker price.
Our affiliate position: The5ers pays us a commission if you sign up through our link. No other firm on this page does. The5ers is ranked where it is because of its on-chain payout record, and you will see it is not first.
The actual recommendations
What changed since the under-$200 guide
Our under-$200 guide was written when Apex was a monthly subscription and Topstep's $50k Combine cost $165 a month. Both have changed. Apex moved to one-time evaluation fees on 1 March 2026. Topstep cut the $50k Combine to $49 a month and added a $149 activation fee. The Funded Trader, which the older guide listed as a Yellow Flag, is now a Red Flag with its website offline. If you are cross-referencing the two guides, this one has the current numbers.
The under-$500 tier, ranked by payout evidence
1. Topstep: $49 to $199 a month, plus $149 activation
Scored 84/100. The $50k, $100k and $150k Trading Combines cost $49, $99 and $199 a month, with a one-time $149 activation fee when you pass; a no-activation path runs $95, $149 and $229. The $150k Combine plus activation is $348 for a one-month pass, comfortably inside the budget. Split is 90/10 from the first dollar for anyone who signed up after 12 January 2026.
Why first: Topstep published its 2025 funnel. 16.8% of Combines completed, 33.3% of funded participants received a payout. It is the only firm on this list that has told you your odds. The cost of that honesty is the subscription clock: budget two to three months, not one.
2. FTMO: €89 to €345
Scored 86/100. €155 for $10k, €250 for $25k, €345 for $50k. The $100k challenge at €540 is just over budget. 2-Step pays 80% rising to 90% with the fee refunded on first payout; 1-Step pays 90% from day one. Payouts on demand after 14 days.
Why second and not first: FTMO's evidence is a CEO statement of $450 million+ paid (September 2025), published company financials, and a site claim of $650 million+, all self-reported. That is more disclosure than anyone else in forex, but no funnel. On a $500 budget, the €345 $50k challenge is the best single purchase in forex if your strategy is proven, and a €345 lesson if it is not. We are not FTMO affiliates.
3. MyFundedFutures: roughly $77 a month or $145 to $463 one-time
Scored 79/100. MFFU now sells several plans: a Core subscription listed at $77 a month for $50k on an 80/20 split, a Rapid plan at 90/10 with 100% of the first $10,000, and one-time-fee options from $145 for $25k to $463 for $150k. No activation fees. Minimum two trading days.
Why it is on the podium: MFFU pays through Rise, which means its payouts are visible on a public blockchain. An independent tracker shows $234.7 million across 147,063 verified payouts all-time and $14.7 million in the last 30 days as of 21 September 2026. That is not a marketing number; it is a ledger. For a trader who has been burned, independently verifiable beats bigger.
4. Apex Trader Funding: $167 to $490 one-time
Scored 88/100. Since March 2026 Apex sells one-time evaluations: Intraday accounts at $167, $249 and $399 within budget, EOD accounts at $390 and $490, plus $79 or $99 activation, per third-party pricing (Apex's site blocks automated checks). 100% of your first $25,000 in withdrawals, then 90/10, with a per-payout ladder and a six-payout lifetime cap per account.
Why fourth with the highest score: our score reflects Apex's stability and payout history, which are excellent. The ranking here is about what $500 buys you, and the six-payout cap plus the ladder means a single sub-$500 Apex account has a hard ceiling that a Topstep or MFFU account does not. Buy Apex when you plan to run several accounts. We are not Apex affiliates.
5. The5ers: under $50 to $249
Scored 81/100. Bootcamp entries under $50 per third-party listings, High Stakes and Hyper Growth in the low hundreds, and a $249 promotional 1-step plan on the firm's site at our review. Bi-weekly payouts with a $150 minimum.
Why fifth: the evidence is good, $93.45 million across 43,650 on-chain-verified payouts as of 20 September 2026, but the growth programs start you at a 50% to 75% split and make you scale. On a $500 budget that is a slow road. It is the right road for a trader who has never passed anything and wants to find out for $39 whether they can follow rules. This is our affiliate link; we earn 5% to 15% if you buy. Read FTMO vs The5ers before you decide.
6. FundedNext: $59.99 to about $520
Scored 78/100. Stellar challenges from $59.99 for $6k, with a $100k challenge at roughly $519, just over budget. Base split 80%, 90% after scale-up, 95% as a paid add-on. Note that using a discount code voids the affiliate commission for whoever referred you, which is why coupon-driven reviews of FundedNext are worth reading with that in mind.
Evidence: $234.5 million across 109,509 on-chain-verified payouts, $12 million in the last 30 days, and $107.8 million in 2025 payouts reported to Prop Firm Match. Strong. Ranked below The5ers only because FundedNext's rules have changed more often, which is a stability signal in our methodology.
7. The crypto tier: $19 to $379
SizeProp from $19, HyroTrader from $59, Propr from $125. None pays us. All three are under three years old as prop firms and none has an independently indexed payout history yet. Spend one evaluation fee, withdraw the first payout in full, and read the crypto comparison first.
How to spend $500, three ways
| Plan | What you buy | Total | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One big swing | FTMO $50k 2-Step | €345 (about $375 to $410) | A proven forex strategy; fee refunded on first payout |
| Two evidence-backed shots | Topstep $50k for 2 months + activation, and a $39 The5ers Bootcamp | $286 | Futures trader who wants a cheap forex side-test |
| Verifiable rail | MFFU $50k one-time plus a reset | Roughly $300 to $500 depending on plan | A trader who was burned and wants on-chain proof |
What we would not buy at any price under $500
The Funded Trader, scored 32/100 and a Red Flag. Its websites were returning HTTP 402 with a disabled-deployment error when we checked on 4 September 2026, and the firm had a multi-month payout pause in 2024. We do not link it and we earn nothing from it.
Also: any firm whose sub-$500 evaluation comes with a consistency rule tighter than 30%, a drawdown model you cannot find documented, or a payment processor it will not name. Those are the evaluation-farm markers from the payout-safety guide, and a cheap ticket does not cancel them.
